David Harouni (Iranian/New Orleans, b. 1962), "Portrait of a Blue Eyed Man" and "Man Napping in the Field,"
two oil on canvas-wrapped panels, constructed to make a side table sculpture, the top portrait signed "Harouni" on side of canvas, the second unsigned,
H.- 21 1/2 in., W.- 12 1/4 in., D.- 12 1/4 in.
$600-900

Condition:
Both the upper and lower canvases exhibit notable overall surface soiling, dust, grime, accretions, staining, and discoloration. Cracking, flaking, and abrasions to the paint throughout, with losses and general wear along the edges and corners. The upper painting exhibits multiple layers of paint, with flaking and losses to the uppermost layer revealing an underlying gray paint layer, as well as deeper chips exposing the canvas support. A split is present in the canvas along the upper side edge. The wood exhibits craquelure, flaking, and losses to the stained finish. The table has looseness to the joints and separations on the legs. On the underside of the lower shelf, the veneer has fully separated from the panel. Beneath the bottom canvas, the veneer has also separated from the underlying panel, this separation can be felt through the canvas. This is a unique and exceptionally rare example, possibly made by the artist for a friend, with wear suggesting it was used and enjoyed as a functional piece of furniture.

H.- 17 3/4 in., W.- 16 3/4 in., D.- 11 1/4 in.
$5,000-8,000

Other Notes: Jesus Moroles was a well-known American sculptor who became famous for his monumental granite sculptures. Perhaps his most notable pieces are the "Lapstrake" in front of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Houston Police Officers Memorial, a pyramid-like earthwork monument in Houston, Texas. He had six solo exhibitions at Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans. Over 2,000 works can be found installed in private, public and corporate locations all over the world, including: the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, New Orleans Museum of Art Sculpture Garden and the China International City Sculpture in Beijing.
