Sale 2601, Lot 160
Three Antique Kerosene Wall Lanterns, mid to late 19th c.,
tin and brass bodies with glass chimneys,
Largest- H.- 12 1/2 in., W.- 6 1/2 in., D.- 13 in. (3 Pcs.)
$400-600

Provenance: From the Collection of William Friedle and Norris Garrison, New York, NY / New Orleans, LA.

Condition:
On the largest example, the font tank and burner parts are intact with the wick. The molded frosted globe appears to be period with numerous chips and abrading to its fitter rim with evidence of past sanding. All the chimneys appear to be replacements. The sinumbra-style chimney of the largest example is without any chips or damage. The other two flutes (one flared and crenallated) are in near mint condition, and the one on the brass example is not glass blown, and is too small for lamp and slides around within the fitter brackets. Both are likely later replacements. On the smaller brass example, the sunburst reflected and holder rim are detached. The reflector and font have scattered dents, nicks, soiling and losses to gilding on the font. The other two examples exhibit accretions, oxidation, nicks, dings and dents. Attractive set. Condition issues are normal, and are to be expected with age, material and use.

Other Notes: The original painting by Lancret, now conserved in the National Gallery of Denmark, Copenhagen, was a popular painting copied numerous times in the late 18th/early 19th century. The piece offered here has only included the children with the flute and omitted the other two lady revelers on the other side of the young suitor.

Cornelis Koppenol (Dutch, 1865-1946), "Mother and Children,"
oil on canvas, signed lower left, with a faint stamp en verso, copy of Benezit artist page attached en verso, presented in an ebonized frame,
H.- 39 3/4 in., W.- 31 1/2 in., Framed- H.- 48 in., W.- 40 1/4 in.
$1,500-2,500

Condition:
In overall very good condition. The surface is clean and exhibits very little craquelure. There is light buckling of the canvas (due to slack) in the upper left and right corners, and a shallow indentation above the chair back on the left. Much of this can be easily repaired by having the canvas properly restretched. There is a small area of heavy craquelure above the babies head (likely due to thicker impasto). Under UV light, there is a small L-shaped inpainted touch-up below the babies foot, and a few touch-ups to the woman's face. The girl's left sleeve and the area behind have been inpainted. There is inpainting to the upper right and upper left quadrants of the background and probably other touch-ups scattered throughout. The background has mottled amorphous colors, which makes it difficult to discern inpainting under both white and UV light.

Sale 2601, Lot 410
Dutch/Flemish School (19th Century), "Twelfth Night Revelers," after Golden Age Masters,
oil on canvas laid down on wood panel, unsigned, presented in a giltwood frame,
H.- 9 1/4 in., W.- 10 5/8 in., Framed- H.- 15 1/4 in., W.- 16 3/4 in.
$500-1,000

Provenance: Property from the Estate of Murphy A. Bourke, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Condition:
A boisterous scene of tavern goers/carolers beholding midgets sparring that would benefit from a good cleaning- as numerous layers of varnish (much of which is yellowed or bloomed- white cloudiness) and surface soiling over and between the varnish layers have significantly darkened the work, obscuring much of the detail. Under UV, there is so much varnish that the work fluoresces avocado green, heavily obstructing the light from detecting earlier restorations when the canvas was laid down on wood. There does, however, to be earlier inpainting in the sky in the top left. Recent inpainting was detected along the lower bottom, to the right edge and to a background figure on the left side of the canvas. The central right figural group appear intact. The frame has a few minor scattered nicks and scratches.

Sale 2601, Lot 466
Jose Villegas y Cordero (Spanish/Italian, 1848-1921), "Market in July,"
oil on canvas, signed lower right "J. Villegas" and titled in Italian "mercado in Giulio", presented in a wood frame,
H.- 14 1/4 in., W.- 20 1/4 in., Framed- H.- 17 3/4 in., W.- 23 1/2 in.
$1,000-2,000

Other Notes: Jose Villegas studied and lived in Italy for the majority of his career, first in Venice and later in Rome. In 1898 he was appointed as the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome ( a post he held until 1918). In recognition of position in Italy he was also made director of the Prado Museum in 1901. Mariano Barbasan Lagueruela, a fellow Spaniard, and accomplished painter, also worked in Rome between 1912- 1921, and would have been well acquainted with Villegas, 20 years his senior, and director of the Academy of Fine Arts. Lagueruela is known to have painted this exact same market scene in the outskirts of Rome. Whether the Spanish artists painted the scene together on one of their sojourns to Anticoli Corrado (Italian countryside village) or Villegas (or vice versa) copied the work of the other is not known. Both artists were known to copy the works of other contemporary artists and Villegas' later style exhibits loose brush work, with variations in his signature without the crossed V that also include his full name and the initial J.

Provenance: Property from the Estate of Murphy A. Bourke, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Condition:
There are two well integrated wax patch repairs en verso with correspondent inpainting on the right side of the canvas to the entryway on the building on the left above the stairs and to right (left facing) edge of the second building from the left. These repairs are not readily visible except under UV light which also detected minor abrading, a flake loss, and inpainted "touch-ups" to the top center of the sky. Surface is relatively clean and free of soiling with light craquelure. There are two tiny staple-sized punctures/holes to the canvas in the lower right quadrant. The holes are so small that light does not really shine through to photograph well. In overall good condition. Condition is as to be expected with age, material and medium.

Sale 2601, Lot 639
Impressive Fighting Eagle Bronze Fountain,
in the form of two eagles in flight sparring over fish, over a seafoam base with fish, the fish in the eagle's talons and fish on base fitted with spouts,
Overall- H.- 82 in., W.- 108 in., D.- 42 in.
$3,000-6,000

Provenance: The Estate of Joseph A. Jaeger, Jr., New Orleans, LA.

Condition:
The fountain exhibits significant wear and condition issues throughout. A major crack runs through the depth of the base, rendering the work structurally compromised and preventing it from standing upright without external support; one of the eagles requires independent bracing. General oxidation and patination are present overall, with areas of verdigris, particularly to the base, and mineral buildup, especially on the talons. The surfaces show heavy accumulations of dirt, dust, grime, and accretions. Due to the scale and instability of the piece, restoration or professional conservation is recommended and in person inspection is advised. Despite condition issues, this is a visually striking and impressive example.
