Cornelis Koppenol (Dutch, 1865-1946), "Mother and Children,"
oil on canvas, signed lower left, with a faint stamp en verso, copy of Benezit artist page attached en verso, presented in an ebonized frame,
H.- 39 3/4 in., W.- 31 1/2 in., Framed- H.- 48 in., W.- 40 1/4 in.
$1,200-1,800

Condition:
In overall very good condition. The surface is clean and exhibits very little craquelure. There is light buckling of the canvas (due to slack) in the upper left and right corners, and a shallow indentation above the chair back on the left. Much of this can be easily repaired by having the canvas properly restretched. There is a small area of heavy craquelure above the babies head (likely due to thicker impasto). Under UV light, there is a small L-shaped inpainted touch-up below the babies foot, and a few touch-ups to the woman's face. The girl's left sleeve and the area behind have been inpainted. There is inpainting to the upper right and upper left quadrants of the background and probably other touch-ups scattered throughout. The background has mottled amorphous colors, which makes it difficult to discern inpainting under both white and UV light.

There is some abrading and small flake losses along the top edge from when it was relined and restretched. Surface exhibits craquelure, surface soiling, and a few light scratches. With a good cleaning, the colors would be quite rich. Under UV light, there are a few scattered areas of inpainting to the brown ground in the foreground below the grapes, to the outline of one bird, wingtips of another and to the branch in the center background, and to two small scuffs on the right side. Frame has a new minor nicks and scratches.

Sale 2605, Lot 551
Jose Villegas y Cordero (Spanish/Italian, 1848-1921), "Market in July,"
oil on canvas, signed lower right "J. Villegas" and titled in Italian "mercado in Giulio", presented in a wood frame,
H.- 14 1/4 in., W.- 20 1/4 in., Framed- H.- 17 3/4 in., W.- 23 1/2 in.
$800-1,200

Other Notes: Jose Villegas studied and lived in Italy for the majority of his career, first in Venice and later in Rome. In 1898 he was appointed as the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome ( a post he held until 1918). In recognition of position in Italy he was also made director of the Prado Museum in 1901. Mariano Barbasan Lagueruela, a fellow Spaniard, and accomplished painter, also worked in Rome between 1912- 1921, and would have been well acquainted with Villegas, 20 years his senior, and director of the Academy of Fine Arts. Lagueruela is known to have painted this exact same market scene in the outskirts of Rome. Whether the Spanish artists painted the scene together on one of their sojourns to Anticoli Corrado (Italian countryside village) or Villegas (or vice versa) copied the work of the other is not known. Both artists were known to copy the works of other contemporary artists and Villegas' later style exhibits loose brush work, with variations in his signature without the crossed V that also include his full name and the initial J.

Provenance: Property from the Estate of Murphy A. Bourke, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Condition:
There are two well integrated wax patch repairs en verso with correspondent inpainting on the right side of the canvas to the entryway on the building on the left above the stairs and to right (left facing) edge of the second building from the left. These repairs are not readily visible except under UV light which also detected minor abrading, a flake loss, and inpainted "touch-ups" to the top center of the sky. Surface is relatively clean and free of soiling with light craquelure. There are two tiny staple-sized punctures/holes to the canvas in the lower right quadrant. The holes are so small that light does not really shine through to photograph well. In overall good condition. Condition is as to be expected with age, material and medium.

Sale 2605, Lot 557
Attributed to Georgina "Nina" Rothney (British/North Carolina, 1877-1970), "Portrait of a Young Child,"
oil on canvas, unsigned, early 20th c. label en verso identifies artist Nina Rothney and her address "Pembury/ Tudor Rd./Upper Norwood" (location of the artist's studio), presented in a wood frame,
H.- 30 in., W.- 22 in., Framed- H.- 35 1/2 in., W.- 27 1/4 in.
$500-1,000

Other notes: Georgina "Nina" Rothney, born to English parents in India, returned to the London area in her teens and attended the Crystal Palace School of Art, In the early 1900s, she was advertising in the Kennel Club and a sundry of other papers and clubs for portraits and studies of dogs, listing her studio address as Pembury, Tudor Road, Upper Norwood (Surrey). In 1910 when Rothney married Thomas Hill, a wool merchant, she still resided (according to English cenus/address records) in Norwood. By the time her children Betty and Malcolm were born 1912 and 1915, respectively, the family had moved from Norwood to Caterham, which suggests the portrait preceded her children; the notation of the work being "no.1" and the use of an artist/price label is further indicative of a work from the artist's studio. While Rotheny's later works in Southern Pines, North Carolina, are predominately landscapes and floral still lifes in watercolors, her early works were academic studies and portraits in oil. A fine example of this is an oil painting, bearing the same palette as this work, that sold on Sept. 6, 2000 at Christie's in London as lot 94.
