Sale 2512, Lot 2033
Oswaldo Moncayo (Ecuador, 1923-1984), "El Cotopaxi, Ecuador," late 20th c.,
oil on board, signed lower right, titled "El Cotopaxi, Ecuador" lower left, presented in a wood frame,
H.- 15 5/8 in., W.- 21 3/4 in., Framed- H.- 18 in., W.- 24 in.
$150-350

Provenance: Property from a Gentleman Antiquarian and Dealer, Mandeville, Louisiana.

Condition:
Condition is consistent with age. There is a roughly 1 1/2 inch white mark just below straw hut. to the proper right of the mountain, there is a slight canvas indentation. Just above this area, there are 4 thin scratches that are only visible under certain lighting. Additional white markings visible above and to the right of the mountain. This could be residue from something rubbing on the canvas, but looks to be something that a restorer could easily handle. The proper left bottom border has some residue near the frame, which could be consistent with the same stuff at the top. Overall, this painting is a very handsome example.

The wood appears faded or dulled in areas, contributing to the uneven coloration. The legs show abrasions, scuffing, and edge wear, with one foot displaying material loss. Drawer hardware is tarnished but intact.

oil on canvas, signed lower right, titled en verso, unframed, presented with two painted wood pieces on top and bottom,
H.- 72 1/2 in., W.- 73 in.
$300-500

Provenance: The Estate of Joseph A. Jaeger, Jr., New Orleans, LA.

Condition:
This work, along with the rest, is uniquely assembled like a scroll with painted wood door trim on the top of the work and on the bottom to weight the work down when it is hung. The rolled storage process with the ~4 inch trim, however, is not ideal and has caused creasing when rolled and stored with small losses to pigment, cracking and craquelure. Additional small losses and fraying to canvas are exhibited along the edges with minor soiling. Prospective buyers are recommended to stretch the painting to prevent further loss from rolled wood edges and slack. Please see additional photographs.

Provenance: The Estate of Joseph A. Jaeger, Jr., New Orleans, LA.

Condition:
The "Oculus" has a horizontal scratch and pigment flake loss to the upper left. The "Dancing Devil" has two innate nail holes to the upper left (they're filled with paint; they were there when the artist painted on the board) and a large, but light, surface scratch to the lower right quadrant. The green orbs in the lower left exhibit an area that appears to be a stain, but is instead an anomaly in the surface finish. While most of the painted surface is quite matte, this area has more of a satin finish- this could be a touch-up repair, but it is more consistent with inconsistent saturation of pigment into the masonite wood ground. Both works exhibit surface soiling/grime and would benefit from a cleaning as the colors are quite remarkable. Both also have frames with scattered losses to finish, nicks and separation at mitered corners.
