$5,000-8,000
Provenance: From the Collection of Michael Dudley Williams, Sr., Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Purchased by the owner from Rupert Kohlmaier, Sr. (1905-2002).
Note: Although this Louisiana Creole Style Flush Panel Figured Cherry Armoire cannot be attributed to any specific St Domingue immigrant cabinet maker or their apprentices, the construction techniques, styling and local material choices help to closely pinpoint the original story.
The arrival of the flush panel armoire in Louisiana cabinetmaking coincides directly with the immigration of St Domingue cabinetmakers to New Orleans in the late 18th to early 19th century. These cabinetmakers arrived carrying with them their traditions, combining fine French cabinetmaking techniques with local materials, while being attentive to environmental changes and challenges of humid climates: especially port cities where specialized joinery techniques were required to combat swelling and shrinkage. Choosing local hardwoods, these techniques, proven over time combined with the styling of pieces like this Armoire offered here, which heavily influenced the Louisiana Creole furniture tradition.
Condition:Structurally sound, mellow aged finish with good color, some areas of light toning, some darkening; flush panels have shrinkages, some infilled, some with separation; side with vertical shrinkages, some separation where joined. Scattered nicks, chips, marks, abrasions, indentations, and imperfections, all consistent with age and use. Patination to metal elements, interior in overall good condition with appropriate wear. Exceptionally rare offering.
